Fuquay residents Shirley D. Simmons and Frances A. Senter will receive an Anthemion Award for Preservation Leadership at Capital Area Preservation’s Sixteenth Annual Anthemion Awards Presentation on Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Also honored will be the Fuquay Springs Quester Chapter #1134, the Town of Fuquay-Varina and Old North State Renovations, Inc. for the rehabilitation of the c. 1902 Fuquay Springs Post Office. Seven additional projects from across Wake County will also receive awards. Anthemion Awards recognize outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in historic preservation in Wake County. The name “Anthemion” was inspired by a classical design element seen on many Wake County buildings, including the State Capitol dome in Raleigh.

According to CAP President & CEO, Gary G. Roth, this year’s class of award winners is the largest since the program began in 1994. “In a time of economic stress,” said Roth, “it is a testament to the good economic value of historic preservation that so many individuals, corporations and municipal governments have chosen to rehabilitate and reuse historic properties rather than demolish and replace.”

The event will take place at Caffé Luna, 136 E. Hargett Street, Raleigh. Cocktails and hors d’oevres will be available from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. The award presentation begins promptly at 5:45 PM. Tickets are required. Advance tickets are $10.00 per person. Tickets at the door are $20.00 per person. Please call Capital Area Preservation at 919-833-6404 for ticket availability or email info@cappresinc.org.
