Fuquay-Varina soccer has had a tough go of it this spring in the always powerful Tri-9 conference. The Bengals have dropped three conference matches in a row since an April 6 win over Lee County. Following a 5-0 loss to Apex on Monday night, Fuquay is 4-8-1 overall, 3-8-0 in the Tri-9.

Despite the latest results, Fuquay is still in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Bengals will need a good showing tonight as they visit Holly Springs (2-7-1 Tri-9). There are five playoff spots available to the conference, and the Bengals will be battling the Golden Hawks along with Middle Creek (2-7-2) and Cary (2-7-2) for the fifth and final postseason berth.

This Friday night, Fuquay will be at home for a non-conference matchup with Clayton High. The two teams drew, 1-1, in a meeting last week. Sarah Yoder scored Fuquay’s goal.

Senior forward, Jessie Davis, who has signed to play college soccer at Meredith, leads Fuquay in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points this spring.

The Bengals (9-4, 8-1) dropped a tough contest at Harnett Central on Friday, losing 11-2. Fuquay was scheduled to host Apex (9-1 Tri-9) on Tuesday night after press time in a game that could help decide the conference championship. The Cougars beat Fuquay 3-1 on March 12, handing the Bengals their only conference loss this spring.

The Bengals remain at home this Friday as Holly Springs (10-2, 8-2) visits in another game between teams at the top of the conference. The home stand continues next week as Clayton visits Monday, followed by Green Hope on Tuesday and Athens Drive on Friday evening.
