Competition will begin on Friday, May 14 at 9 a.m. with the women’s heptathlon, followed by the men’s decathlon at 9:30 a.m. The men’s 10000 meter run will conclude day one of the championships at 8:25 p.m.
Day two will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday, finishing off the men’s decathlon. The women’s 4x400 meter relay will close out the competitive portion of the event, and follow with championship presentations at 9 p.m.
Several Camels head into the weekend ranked nationally, regionally and in the A-Sun. As a team, the Campbell men rank 29th in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region, while the women’s unit ranks 37th in the region.
Individually, senior Harold Sims ranks 43rd nationally, fourth in the region and first in the A-Sun in the men’s 400 meter hurdles. The Oxford, N.C. native posted a time of 51.70 at the Joe Hilton Carolina Fast Times earlier in the season. Sims has finished no lower than third in the 400 meter hurdles this outdoor season for Campbell, and was named an A-Sun Athlete of the Week in April.
Freshman Diego Lawrence became the first Camel rookie to earn league Athlete of the Week accolades ever in March, and has since claimed another pair, totaling three on the season. Lawrence’s 7.50 meter long jump mark stands alone in the A-Sun, sixth in the region and just out of the top-50 nationally.
Just behind Lawrence on the conference’s long jump list is junior Robert Brunson, whose 7.24 meter jump second in the league. Brunson’s 13.80 meter triple jump mark stands third on the A-Sun performance list.
Lawrence was also a part of the CU men’s 4x100 meter relay team, which also included Josh Powell, Jared Simmons and Rashad Campbell that reset a school record. The mark ranks second in the A-Sun and 18th in the Southeast Region.
Adoniss Jones, a junior hurdler, is listed 13th in the Southeast in the 110 meter hurdles and first in the A-Sun with a time of 14.11. Jones is also fourth on the 400 meter hurdles list. Jones earned his first A-Sun Athlete of the Week honor of the season two weeks ago after his performance at the Liberty Twilight.
Senior Verrelle Wyatt ranks third in the A-Sun with the 3:55.80 in the men’s 1500 meter run, while the men’s 4x400 meter relay team also stands third with a time of 3:19.59.
On the women’s side, Nadia Natt stands 12th in the region in the triple jump, posting a best of 12.31 meters. The mark also ranks second in the conference. Natt has also claimed one A-Sun Athlete of the Week honor this season.
Fellow freshman Jessica Dunston is also ranked regionally, listed 20th in the women’s hammer throw and first in the conference with a toss of 51.74 meters.
Senior Elizabeth Mize, meanwhile, stands 15th regionally in the high jump with a best of 1.70 meters. The mark ranks third in the A-Sun. Another senior, Jennifer Anderson ranks second in the A-Sun women’s 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.07.
The Camels notched 17 all-conference honors and four individual titles at the 2009 A-Sun Outdoor Championships, as the men finished third and the women fifth. Jacksonville took its fifth straight women’s title, tallying a conference record 212 points, while Campbell finished with 62. The Camel men collected 104 team points, while East Tennessee State won the title with 198.
