Holly Springs will lose a unique local business when The Nature of Art at Sunset lake Commons closes its doors on Jul. 23.

Not only is this the only business in Holly Springs that carries a variety of local art, but it is one of the rare stores with this mission in Wake County.

In addition to providing a showcase for artists, the shop also specializes in custom framing and personal service to a clientele that has grown steadily over the past three decades.

Judie Howard has owned the business for 30 years. She has been a member of the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce since she relocated to Holly Springs from Waverly Place in Cary three years ago.

This store was the first local business to kick off Art After Dark Second Friday that has involved as many as ten participating galleries, coffee shops and venues including the Holly Springs Cultural Center.

The Nature of Art has also offered a variety of workshops taught by artists from Raleigh, Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, and Fuquay-Varina. Judie will continue offering the classes when she relocates her business to her home workshop and studio near Clayton.

“The butterfly is a symbol of change and change is coming for the Nature of Art,” said Judie who uses a butterfly painting by Holly Springs artist, Lynne Wogan, as the logo for her business. Judie will continue providing her services and experience in custom framing to Apex, Cary, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina, and now Cleveland, Garner and Clayton-area clients.

“The change in location has created the idea for a new approach to the framing part of my business that I am calling “Have frames, will travel,” she explained. Her plan is to make a free “house call” for consultation and delivery, or the customer may choose to come to the new location to pick out their framing and opt for free delivery.

“My goal throughout my retail career in Wake County has been to provide customers with the personal touch that you don’t find in a chain store,” she said. “Framing is an important part of home decor and ambiance, and people put a lot of care into their choices. It is very helpful to have an experienced framer to consult before making a decision. Now with individual appointments I will be able to offer even more hands on and personalized care in helping clients select frames for their art and home decor.”

Art classes by local artists to be offered will include Water Soluble Oils, Painted Floor Cloths, Watercolor Batik, Card Making and more. Already scheduled classes include Watercolor Painting, August 14 and Precious Metal Clay Jewelry, September 11 by Fuquay-Varina artist, Rocky Alexander, Hammered Silver Jewelry, August 21 by Apex artist, Jeannette Barringer, Halloween Slate Painting on September 25 by Cary artist, Alice Rogers, and more.

“The small classes have proven to be increasingly popular and give students individual attention without requiring them to make large commitments or enroll in a long term curriculum,” said Judie. “They have appealed to everyone from budding artists to more experienced artists wanting to fine tune certain skills so we are excited to be able to carry on with them.”
